Geographical  location

           Buzău county is  situated  in the South-East  of  the  country and  its neighbouring  counties  are from North to East the following: Vrancea, Braila, Ialomita,  Prahova, Brasov and Covasna.

          The  surface of the county represents  approximately  2,6%  of the country`s surface area and is administratively  organised in 2 municipalities, 2 towns, 81 communes and  481  villages.

           Relief

        As Buzău lies near the curvature of the Carpathians its relief  includes   plains, hills and  mountains whose  height  range from  1722 m (Penteleu  Masiff )  to 40 m, (Calmatui  Valley).

           Climate

         The climate is temperate continental.

           Water Supply

        The varied relief zones and the climatic influence are reflected in diversity of the water supply of the county. There are mineral water and sulphurous springs. Buzău is crossed by the river which bears the same name and also by its tributaries, namely Slanic, Niscov, Caliman, Siriu and Nehoiu 

 

         

          Flora

 

          The vegetation varies according to the zones, climates and geographical position and falls under the following headings:

          - Subalpine vegetation consists of trees, mass and alder trees

          - Coniferous forests which consists of fir-trees, spruce firs, pine-trees and Yen trees.

          - Deciduous forests which consists of beech trees, alder trees, sycomere maples and elm trees.

          The forest steppe is the characteristic vegetation of the plains.

 

           Fauna

       The fauna is extremely  rich among the animals that can be seen are the brown bears, the finch, wild boar and martin.

                    

          Natural reserves

         The law - protected nature reserves of our country are: Spataru forest, Frasin forest, Bradeanu forest, Paclele Mari, Muddy volcanoes, Badila Limestone Blocks, Salt reserves and so on .

 

 

              History

           

          Archeological reaserch done on the territory of the county has proved the presence of man in these parts of the country as early as middle paleolithic, as confirmed excavations made in Aldeni and Monteoru where people found tools, carved stone and earthenware pots belonging to Boian and Monteoru cultures.

      Situated at the crossroads of some Romanian provinces such as Muntenia, Moldova, Transilvania    Buzău has acted as mediator between them, enabeling effective communication between dwellers in the Carphatian, Danubian and pontic regions. The formation process of the independent state of Tara Romaneasca is organically linked to this space conferring  it a significant defending role and a certain political individuality.

       Buzău was mentioned for the first time in documents in 1481;  Buzău and Ramnicu Sarat fairs were initially mentioned in 1431, 1439, respectively.

        

         In the year 1500, when Radu the Great ruled the country, Buzău became the Episcopal and spiritual residence of the county. After the restauration of the Church in the time of Radu the Great it became Bishops residence.

          In spite of the numerous losses suffered, Buzău continued to be one of the most important towns of the country.

        

        

       

 
 

        Turismul

          Sarata Monteoru health Spar

        It is situated 30 km away from Buzău at an altitude of 86 m.

          Muddy volcanoes at Paclele Mari

         The geological reserve lies between Buzău valley and Slanic valley and is the main tourist attraction of the region.

          Banu Church

       It is located in the center of the town and was built by Serban Cantacuzino's  wife in 1772.

 

 

          The Episcopal Palace

         The establishment was founded by Radu the Great and was restored in 1649

         The Episcopal Palace has a library which includes manuscripts and valuable old books.

 

          

               Amber museum

           The museum building is an architectural masterpiece, exhibits amber, yellow amber, green, as well as black amber, which is very valuable

 

George Ciprian Theatre was set up in 1996 and it is the first Romanian theatre based on projects.

       The establishment bears the name of the well-known playwright G.Ciprian.

  

 

       The County Museum

     It was set up in 1895 and its building is considered to be an architectural masterpiece.

      The museum displays  folk art, etnographical, historical and art, collections boasting a rich patrimony of 46.000 exibits assembled in valuable collections.

 

 Magura open air sculpture camp

        The sculpture exhibition is located 30 km away from Buzău municipality, close to Ciolanu monastery, It was opened in 1970 and includes 250 sculptures, being considered the most important exhibition of this type in Romania.
